The new school academic year is scheduled to commence on Sunday across the Sultanate of Oman, marking the introduction of an updated national curriculum by the Ministry of Education. This modernized educational framework is designed to reinforce Islamic principles, encourage core societal values, and preserve Omani identity. Drawing inspiration from the cultural heritage and history of Oman, the curriculum aims to equip students with sustainable development concepts and necessary future skills.
The revised educational offerings for the upcoming academic year include an expanded range of subjects. Among these updates are the introduction of the English Language Series for Grade 1, a Chinese Language series tailored for Grade 12, and modernized materials for subjects such as Information Technology, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Musical Arts, and Physical and Health Education. To accommodate the tourism sector during the khareef season, the ministry previously rescheduled the start of the 2026/2027 school year from August 30 to September 6.
These curricular updates arrive during a period of steady expansion in Oman's student population. Enrollment figures in school education have increased significantly, rising from 814,368 students during the 2021/2022 academic term to a projected 980,166 students for the 2025/2026 school year.
To facilitate a safe return to classrooms, the Royal Oman Police has initiated its annual Student Safety awareness campaign. This program focuses heavily on educating and training school bus drivers to ensure secure commutes for students.
