The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Botswana have signed multiple agreements and memoranda of understanding during a state visit by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Botswana. These accords span various sectors, including political consultations, visa exemptions for diplomatic and special passport holders, air services, investment promotion, energy security, and pharmaceutical cooperation. Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi expressed Oman's commitment to bolstering relations, highlighting the importance of building ties based on mutual trust and respect. The Omani Foreign Minister noted his desire for the rapid implementation of these agreements to yield concrete benefits for both nations.
The state visit marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, which are expanding rapidly across economic sectors. According to Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, President of the Oman Investment Authority, the relationship has developed swiftly, with leaders directing teams to work at an accelerated pace to expand partnerships. The Republic of Botswana's Minister of International Relations, Dr Phenyo Butale, described the visit as a historic event, referencing existing achievements such as the mega solar power plant project in Maun. Dr Butale emphasized that these newly signed memorandums will facilitate investment in priority areas including energy, mining, agriculture, and tourism.
Energy security and regional distribution are major pillars of the newly established partnerships. Mustafa bin Mohammed al Hinai, CEO of O-Green, stated that a newly signed memorandum on energy security will allow O-Green to transmit energy produced from its Botswana projects to surrounding nations. This is supported by David Kgoboko, CEO of Botswana Power Corporation, who observed that the region possesses significant opportunities to export electricity due to the projected energy surplus expected from joint station operations.
