The Saudi-led Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition (MMDC) has officially commenced its operational phase from its designated command headquarters, transitioning from strategic planning to active deployment. Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri of Saudi Arabia serves as the coalition's commander, while Commodore Rashid Sheikh from the Pakistan Navy has assumed his role as deputy commander for the coalition's inaugural term. Liaison officers from various member countries and nations finalizing their membership have begun taking up their posts at the headquarters, with more officers expected to arrive based on national allocations.
This operational activation follows the coalition's third planning conference, which took place on August 13 at the Western Fleet Command in Jeddah. Attended by representatives from 39 nations, the meeting finalized organizational structures and practical arrangements to integrate military personnel from member states into a unified command. Currently, 15 nations have signed the MMDC joint statement, while 13 have completed national procedures and signed the official charter to become formal members. Other countries are presently finalizing their domestic processes to join the alliance.
In addition to establishing its command structure, the MMDC has approved its official logo and finalized the operational reference documents and planning frameworks required to guide its missions. The coalition is designed to build a sustainable, cooperative maritime defense system. Its core objectives include safeguarding strategic waterways, protecting freedom of navigation, and securing international trade routes and global supply chains. Guided by international law and its charter, the MMDC aims to consolidate the maritime capabilities of its member states to enhance regional and global security.
