ABU DHABI — The upcoming 35th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF 2026) is set to introduce the ‘Emirati Pioneers’ initiative. This annual national project is dedicated to documenting the influential contributions of leading figures in United Arab Emirates culture and thought, transforming their individual experiences into lasting knowledge and cultural material that enriches the collective national memory.
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), the project aligns with the centre’s broader vision to construct a cultural ecosystem focused on producing, preserving, and disseminating knowledge. The initiative operates on the principle that major cultural transformations are best understood not just through institutions, but through the personal journeys, ideas, and societal impacts of the individuals who drove them. This shifts the focus of cultural biographies from simple celebration and commemoration into documented knowledge and collective memory.
The initiative will trace the paths of prominent figures in media, literature, art, thought, and institutional work, placing their journeys within the context of the UAE’s development since the establishment of the Union in 1971. Rather than serving as a traditional tribute, ‘Emirati Pioneers’ will generate enduring resources. It will utilise publishing, documentation, and dialogue to recreate these experiences through specialized sessions, personal testimonies, documentary publications, knowledge materials, and visual works.
This new dimension adds a national documentation aspect to the book fair’s role. Beyond acting as a hub for publishers, authors, and international dialogue, the fair will become a space where knowledge is actively preserved and reintroduced. Younger generations will gain access to these diverse sources, turning personal biographies into educational material, research resources, and inspiration to build upon for the future.
As a cumulative annual project, each edition of the fair will highlight a new figure, progressively building a multi-generational knowledge map of the UAE’s cultural landscape. This ongoing documentation aims to repurpose the past as a living reference to shape the future, reinforcing the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s position as a premier platform for presenting Emirati achievements to local, regional, and international audiences.
