On the challenging fourth stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain, UAE Team Emirates-XRG executed a tactical display in the Yorkshire Dales to propel Belgian rider Tim Wellens into the general classification lead. Wellens claimed second place on the stage in Leyburn, earning the leader's green jersey ahead of Sunday's final stage.
The fourth stage, which began in Helmsley, is widely considered the toughest day of the 22nd Tour of Britain. Early in the race, a six-man breakaway established a three-minute advantage over the peloton, which was being controlled by NSN Cycling Team on behalf of the previous leader, Lewis Askey.
However, the dynamic of the race shifted on the Greenhow Bank climb, a 3.3-kilometer ascent with a 7.9% gradient. UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Mikkel Bjerg moved to the front of the peloton to set a demanding pace, successfully wearing down the general classification contenders.
Building on this effort, Wellens launched a decisive attack with 42.8 kilometers remaining in the stage. He caught the remnants of the breakaway and crossed the finish line alongside Cees Bol of Decathlon CMA CGM, who took the stage win.
Prior to Saturday's stage, Askey held a 12-second lead over Wellens. Following the day's action, Wellens successfully overturned the deficit and now holds a 21-second advantage over Askey. UAE Team Emirates-XRG will seek to defend the leader's jersey during stage five as they pursue their first-ever overall victory at the Tour of Britain.
