On the occasion of the seventh International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, declared that improving air quality is a key national priority for the UAE. Dr. Al Dahak emphasized that clean air serves as a crucial investment in public health, economic resilience, and societal prosperity. Because air pollution and climate change share common origins, the Minister noted that coordinated actions can simultaneously advance both climate goals and sustainable development.
The country's efforts are guided by the National Air Quality Agenda 2031, which establishes a structured framework for federal, local, and private sector coordination. This agenda focuses on monitoring, mitigation, and management across multiple areas, including outdoor and indoor air quality, ambient odour, and ambient noise. These pillars are reinforced by federal environmental laws and regulatory standards designed to limit, control, and oversee emissions.
To translate these policies into practical outcomes, the UAE has built a robust digital infrastructure. The National Air Quality Platform offers real-time data on air conditions nationwide. To enhance this system, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has introduced a centralized digital dashboard that gathers air-quality monitoring data from various local environmental regulators. This system replaces older, fragmented reporting methods with a standardized national workflow, enhancing data quality, analysis, and inter-government cooperation to better inform evidence-based policy.
Additionally, the Ministry has finalized an integrated national emissions Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system. This system tracks both priority air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, creating a single digital pathway to collect, verify, and analyze facility-level emissions. By merging air pollutants and greenhouse gases into a unified system, the MRV framework improves the nation's capacity to identify pollution sources, monitor progress, and direct targeted mitigation measures.
The UAE is also developing national air-quality forecasting and early-warning systems. By combining monitoring data, weather information, and analytical tools, the nation aims to anticipate future pollution episodes and implement proactive responses. Dr. Al Dahak concluded that these integrated initiatives represent a major transition toward a comprehensive cycle of measuring, understanding, and managing air-quality risks.
