AJMAN – The Emirate of Ajman is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the accession of His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, who assumed leadership following the passing of his father, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi.
Sheikh Humaid’s early years prepared him closely for governance. Educated initially in mosque study circles in the Holy Quran, Hadith, and Islamic jurisprudence, he later studied language and mathematics under various scholars, alongside training in equestrian and martial arts. He was appointed Crown Prince in 1960 and worked closely alongside his father. Sheikh Humaid was actively involved in the foundational discussions of the UAE Federation beginning in 1968, representing his father during the nation’s establishment.
Throughout his reign, Sheikh Humaid has prioritised human development and public welfare. In education, his efforts date back to the late 1950s when he encouraged enrollment in semi-formal schooling, followed by the opening of Ajman’s first school for girls in 1960. He established the Rashid bin Humaid Award for Culture and Sciences in 1983 and supported the 1988 launch of Ajman University College, which later transitioned into Ajman University.
Governance in the emirate was further structured under Emiri Decree No. 4 of 2003, which established the Ajman Executive Council to lead strategic planning and policy formulation.
Economic and infrastructure growth has been a key pillar of Sheikh Humaid’s tenure. The Ajman Free Zone Authority has consistently attracted international and local businesses through targeted incentives, while expansions at Ajman Port have facilitated increased maritime trade. Tourism and urban development have also expanded, supported by new real estate, hospitality projects, and upgraded municipal infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public transport.
Public safety has remained a core focus, culminating in Ajman securing the top global ranking in perceived safety for several consecutive years, including 2026. This focus is coupled with advancements in the healthcare sector, which has expanded to provide services aligned with international standards.
Sheikh Humaid has also championed humanitarian and social initiatives. Under his leadership, the International Charity Organisation was established in 1984 as the first charitable association in the UAE. Additionally, the Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Foundation continues to assist vulnerable groups, including low-income families, orphans, widows, and senior citizens, alongside his active support for national sports such as camel racing and equestrian events.
